Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Mix in buttermilk, red food coloring, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, beat cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in heavy cream until desired consistency is reached.
  9. Once the cakes are cool, frost the top of one layer, place the other layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the cake.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a teaspoon of espresso powder to the batter.
  • Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing.
